U.S. Marine Honored at NASCAR Sprint Cup Race

Crown Royal Awards Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Deeds Race Naming Rights through Annual “Your Hero’s Name Here” ProgramWhile deployed in Iraq, Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Deeds, a diehard NASCAR fan, dreamed of working in the sport after completing his service. In 2005, those dreams took a back seat when Deeds placed himself in harm’s way to save the lives of his fellow Marines. This summer Deeds will travel to one of the country’s most historic tracks, Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS), not as a fan or employee, but as the race namesake.Today in his hometown of Erlanger, Ky., Deeds was recognized as the winner of Crown Royal’s “Your Hero’s Name Here” program, which awards one deserving individual naming rights to the July 28th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at IMS. Surrounded by friends, family and Marines, Deeds cemented his place in the NASCAR record books by laying the final brick, engraved with the official race logo, in a ceremonial “Yard of Bricks” at Flagship Park in Erlanger. While deployed in Iraq, Deeds came across an improvised explosive device (IED) while setting up a vehicle checkpoint. Upon seeing fellow Marines approaching, he exposed himself to the device, risking his own life to save others. He was severely injured and underwent more than 30 surgeries and procedures following the blast. Three years later, while still recovering, Deeds’ heroic instincts took charge once again when he saved the lives of three individuals caught in a rip tide off the coast of North Carolina. In addition to Deeds’ friends and family, special representatives from Crown Royal, Big Machine Label Group (BMLG), and IMS attended the ceremony and spoke of Deeds’ many accomplishments. NASCAR driver Kurt Busch surprised Deeds during the ceremony, appearing on behalf of the Armed Forces Foundation (AFF), alongside AFF President and Executive Director Patricia Driscoll. Country music star Justin Moore debuted a special song titled “Heroes,” which was penned specifically for the “Your Hero’s Name Here” program. Consumers 21 and over can visit CrownHeroesSong.com to download “Heroes” for free. For every download redeemed between now and the Samuel Deeds 400 on July 28th, Crown Royal will donate one dollar to AFF.“I was so fortunate to be part of this program last summer,” said Moore. “That experience and the brave men and women I met along the way served as inspiration for this new song. The opportunity to debut ‘Heroes’ in front of a true hero like Samuel, his friends, family and community, is incredibly special to me as well as all of the folks at BMLG.”This will mark the seventh time Crown Royal has awarded race naming rights to an adult fan. After receiving thousands of entries during the nomination period, five heroes were chosen as finalists and adult fans had the opportunity to cast their votes for the person they felt was most deserving of the honor. As the winner of the program, Deeds will participate in a VIP race weekend experience, riding in the pre-race pace car, delivering the trophy bearing his name to the race winner in Victory Lane, and participating in the “kissing the bricks” ceremony following the race.“I’ve been a NASCAR fan for as long as I can remember, so the reality of having my name on a track with such rich history and meaning is beyond words,” said Deeds. “I am so grateful to all of those who took the time to hear my story and vote for me. I can’t wait to attend the race and dedicate that special weekend to all fellow servicemen and women who put their lives on the line every day.”Deeds, now retired from his service in the Marines, is a husband and father of two boys. His wife, April, nominated him for the program for his unwavering commitment to his country.“We could not be more honored to announce Gunnery Sergeant Samuel Deeds as the 2013 ‘Your Hero’s Name Here’ winner,” said Abby Wise, Brand Director for Crown Royal. “His sacrifice and continued acts of heroism serve as an inspiration to all of us at Crown Royal and we are proud to provide him with the ultimate race experience at the Brickyard next month.”The official race title, Crown Royal Presents the Samuel Deeds 400 at the Brickyard Powered by BigMachineRecords.com, will be incorporated into race memorabilia as well as the winner’s trophy. Various events and celebrations will take place leading up to and throughout race weekend to honor Deeds, during which Crown Royal would like to remind adult consumers to please drink responsibly.“It is our privilege to participate in this program with Crown Royal for the second year at IMS,” said Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation COO Doug Boles. “We’ve been introduced to so many deserving American heroes, and we look forward to rolling out the red carpet for Samuel and all other heroes in attendance at this year’s race.” Through a partnership with Crown Royal and IMS, country music artists from Big Machine Label Group including Justin Moore, Cadillac Three, Cassadee Pope and Dustin Lynch, will perform special concerts throughout the race weekend. About Crown RoyalCrown Royal Canadian whisky is the number one selling Canadian whisky brand in the US by value and has a tradition as long and distinctive as its taste. Morning Show Team Shares Feelings on Loss of Kidd Kraddick

Kidd Kraddick in the Morning

A Monday morning broadcast of the "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" show featured a tribute to Kidd, who suddenly died over the weekend. With the future of the show without Kraddick yet to be determined, this week (for the most part) a series of "Best of" shows are being aired. But today a live segment featured co-hosts/sidekicks in a tear-filled, heartfelt series of reflections of their friend and leader. Singer Gavin DeGraw began the live tribute, recalling that Kidd had been such a personal friend and mentor to him and so many artists, and then offering an acoustic version of his 2005 single "Chariot." The song, from a 2003 album, has previously been described by DeGraw as "a metaphorical vehicle for getting to a place in your mind that is a more broken down and laid back. It's somewhere to be just for a moment--instead of being wrapped up and living wherever you're living and consumed with what you're doing. It's a place to release and chill out." Then "Kidd Kraddick in the Morning" sidekick Kellie Rasberry told listeners, "We don't really know what we're gonna say here." He added that the crew is "beyond devastated" and that Kidd Kraddick's death was a shock. Rasberry also rejected rumors that the crew had been hiding information about his health. "Everybody has questions, and we don't have any answers." Big Al Mack said, "We're just here to talk." Rasberry said Kidd spent his last night shooting craps and making videos on the streets of New Orleans, then became ill before the golf tournament the next morning. Jenna Owens remembered learning golf from Kraddick and bonding with him over the sport over the years, saying his last words to her were "great shot," watching her swing on the golf course. Jose "J-Si" Chavez said he saw Kraddick as a father figure and fought off tears recalling that Kraddick's last words to him were "I'm so proud of you." Then, "Psycho Shanon" Murphy said Kraddick was "like a dad to me," but remembered that Kraddick's last words to her were to complain about the last song played on Friday's show. She called him a perfectionist but said he wanted to give back to people and have the show be the best it could be. Murphy, unsuccessfully fighting back tears, recalled Kraddick helping her financially through a family crisis. "There's just nobody else like him," said Murphy. They then went into an acoustic version of Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" followed by Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" before concluding the live segment. Kelly told listeners, "It will never be the same without Kidd and we don't know what the future holds but we have our memories of Kidd." The show continued with lots of memories and callers, plus some classic bits from past shows. Kelly ended the segment telling listeners they would let everyone know what was next as soon as they could but that they were going to take the rest of the week off, and that there would be "best of" programming airing.

Politico: Cumulus Planning to Drop Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity

Rush Limbaugh

"In a major shakeup for the radio industry, Cumulus Media, the second-biggest broadcaster in the country, is planning to drop both Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from its stations at the end of the year, an industry source told Politico on Sunday," reports Politico's Dylan Byers. Sean Hannity "Cumulus has decided that it will not renew its contracts with either host, the source said, a move that would remove the two most highly rated conservative talk personalities from more than 40 Cumulus channels in major markets." According to the report, the decision comes after negotiations between Cumulus and Clear Channel's Premiere Networks broke down due to disagreements over the cost of the distribution rights, the source said. "Cumulus is known to drive a hard bargain on costs, and Clear Channel is known to seek top dollar for big names," writes Byers. But he notes, "As industry insiders caution, Cumulus and Clear Channel have come to the brink before during contract negotiations only to resume talks. But the source told Politico that Clear Channel was unlikely to reduce the cost for distribution rights to a level that would satisfy Cumulus." So far, there's no on-the-record comment from Cumulus or Premiere.

ASCAP Asks FCC to Deny Pandora Purchase of KXMZ-FM

Pandora

ASCAP is asking the FCC to deny Pandora's purchase of Hot AC KXMZ-FM, Box Elder-Rapid City, South Dakota, from Connoisseur Media. In a "Petition to Deny," ASCAP alleges that Pandora "is buying KXMZ for one reason – to argue that it is entitled to pay lower music performance royalties to composers, songwriters and lyricists for its billions of online-only internet music streams." In the filing ASCAP writes, "In its rush to implement its scheme, Pandora has overlooked certain basic Commission requirements. In the application to assign KXMZ’s license, Pandora has failed to fully disclose its ownership, and to adequately demonstrate that it complies with the Commission’s foreign ownership rules." ASCAP The petition adds, "Pandora's public statements lay bare its plot: to use KXMZ as a bargaining chip in Pandora's quest to obtain lower royalty rates for its online music streams. Given these brazen proclamations, there can be no doubt Pandora’s interests do not lie in providing service to Box Elder and the greater Rapid City area." The ownership disclosure allegations involve Pandora shareholders Wellington Management Company and William Blair and Company, which ASCAP alleges do not qualify as "investment companies" subject to a higher threshold for ownership disclosure but are, rather, "investment advisers" subject to the 5% threshold. ASCAP also alleges that information filed about attributable shareholder Crosslink Capital is incomplete, and that the structure of Wellington and William Blair's holdings might violate foreign ownership restrictions.

Bobby Bones Show Launches '30 Abes' Haiti Hunger Relief Campaign

30 Abes in Haiti

The Premiere Networks nationally syndicated Bobby Bones Show has launched a new public service campaign to benefit hunger relief in Haiti. The show has joined efforts with the non-profit group TeemHaiti and international hunger relief organization Numana to create "30 Abes" -- a special campaign and food packaging event in Nashville benefitting hunger relief in Haiti. On Saturday, September 28, 2013, thousands of volunteers will gather at Nashville Municipal Auditorium with the goal to package 500,000 meals to send to the Maison Des Enfants De Dieu orphanage in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. As extra motivation to meet their goal, the volunteers will also participate in a Guinness World Records official attempt for the title of "most hunger relief meals packaged in one hour" by a team. The current record of 479,034 was achieved by Numana, Volunteer Kansas and the Rotary Club of Wichita on February 16, 2013. The event will also benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee in Nashville as packaging volunteers will be encouraged to bring canned and boxed-food donations. "It's easy to get overwhelmed by all the problems in the world and our desire to do something that makes a difference," says Amy, co-host of the Bobby Bones Show. "What's great about 30 Abes is that it gives us all a place to start. The people receiving this food at the orphanage are very special to me, and knowing that they will be well fed, and even have plenty to share with their neighbors, warms my heart. We can make a difference together and I'm thankful to everyone who supports 30 Abes and this worthy cause in any way they can."

Color Film of Hollywood in 1931

A Unique Look at Old Hollywood - the REAL Old HollywoodDirigible film poster jjbjorkman.blogspot.comI have a poster of the 1931 film "Dirigible" above, but that's only a part of what is interesting about the below raw film footage from a long-ago day in Hollywood, California. I like film that seems to come from a time that it shouldn't, such as the 1939 color film of New York City that shows an uncannily modern city. This film is "amateur" only in the sense that most of it was filmed by an individual for his own enjoyment. Everything else about the footage is extremely professional, suggesting a Hollywood big shot of some sort had it filmed with cutting-edge equipment. But we aren't given any information on the source of the film. Perhaps, for some reason during the height of the Great Depression in 1931, somebody - most likely a technician or publicist (probably a team of both, in fact) at Columbia Pictures - decided to give one of the extremely rare color film cameras a workout one day. Perhaps he had never or rarely used one and needed the practice. He/they went around town, filming ordinary street scenes and some of the mansions on Rodeo Drive and various tourist attractions. They finally zeroed in on the real target: the big premiere at Graumann's Chinese Theater that night, April 4, 1931. The camera crew actually drives right past Graumann's earlier in the film, in daylight, but you have to look hard to notice. The area is suprisingly dingy. It's almost like a tourist film, though no tourist in those days would have had a color camera. The camera movements are not jerky, but smooth and mechanically controlled. Notice the careful pan skyward at the new Rudolph Valentino statue. This is not some random guy with a hand-held job.Time is spent at Valentino's grave - he had just died a few years earlier, the monument must have been brand new - and some big shot is seen playing with his dog at a hotel entrance while others look on. The dog is barking at an organ grinder's monkey, who is scampering about in the street. More time is spent looking over the brand new Hollywood Bowl, built in 1929, and then switching to the other side of it to look at the crowd assembling for the day's performance. The camera crew either was bored, or they were just practicing filming in different lighting conditions. Some of the shots are a bit over-saturated, perhaps they were working on getting the settings right. In the street scenes, the cars whizz by dangerously, but something is missing: they have no turn signals. Blinkers were not invented until 1938, and not put in their present form until 1940 (and they haven't changed since). The mansions are interesting. While at first they look very similar to today's houses, they seem to have fewer windows. That must have been the style in those days. Also, for such lavish houses, they don't seem particularly protected from the public, with simple driveways through un-enclosed arches. Also, nobody seems particularly hard-up, everything looks perfectly normal - in the middle of the Great Depression. Hollywood was a Depression-proof town. Then it is on to the big premiere. The film is "Dirigible," a Frank Capra drama about exploring the Antarctic in, you guessed it, a dirigible. The film starred Fay Wray, Jack Holt and Ralph Graves and cost more than any picture Columbia had made to date.We get to see the stars make their entrances outside the theater, just as they do today. Wray poses coyly for the cameras as the men rush through the photo op in perfunctory fashion. The woman in white, relatively plain clothes (wait and compare the women who follow!) who arrives first is Bessie Love. Love began her film career in 1915 and continued, fairly steadily, into the 1980s. One could legitimately say that she was at the peak of her fame in 1931, and that it was all downhill from there.Frank Fay, a comic actor enjoying a brief period of fame, arrives (that is only shown in the second video below). Unmentioned is his wife holding onto him - Barbara Stanwyck, who was just starting to get leading roles in minor films. They divorced a few years later, her career on the rise, his failing. He died, forgotten, in 1961, at a time when Stanwyck was still on top and about to become a major television star. (You'll have to watch the second video below for Fay and Stanwyck.) "A Star is Born," anyone?Silent film star Sally O'Neil, recognizable by her distinctive nose, arrives. She is accompanied by her husband and another couple, all decked out to the nines. Check out the white minks the women are wearing, and the imperious look that O'Neil gives toward the hoi polloi fighting each other for position behind the gallery ropes! O'Neil is completely forgotten today, her career already on the ropes at the time of this film because her New Jersey accent did not project well in the new talkies. She was the epitome of the 1920s actress who couldn't transition to talkies, perhaps the model for the similar character in "Singing in the Rain." No starlet would be caught dead wearing a mink stole these days.Edward G. Robinson arrives with his first wife, Gladys, whom he divorced 25 years later. She looks nice, but is rather plain.Carl Laemmle, the founder of Universal Pictures, arrives with a big smile and a nod, checking out the competition. Thomas Edison, his fierce business rival, would pass away later that year.Gloria Swanson is the lady in red, preening for the cameras. "I'm ready for my close-up, Mr. Demille!" She projects more star power than anyone else. "Thank you, Miss Swanson." She utters a few words after leaving view about how fascinating the premiere is - it must have been quite a big deal to impress even a big star like her. It was Columbia's first million-dollar picture, and they pulled out all the stops to promote it.Tickets were $5 apiece, a king's ransom during the Depression for people who might not make $5 in a week. The film apparently was a success. While "Dirigible" is completely forgotten, it had a lot of eerie elements that foreshadowed tragic future events: it was shot in the same hanger at Lakehurst, New Jersey which the Hindenburg was headed for half a dozen years later, and the aircraft carrier Lexington, which sank in World War II, is seen. The airship "Los Angeles," somewhat ironically given the way it is used in the film, was one of the few United States airships that didn't crash, instead being decommissioned in 1932 and broken up in 1939, after rigid airships went out of style.Just observing how they promoted big films in those days - with the title spelled out in giant lit-up letters against the surrounding darkness, klieg lights flashing - is a thrill for film buffs. However, it isn't the fact of the premiere that is the most interesting thing about this clip, but just the oddness of seeing Hollywood itself in color early in a decade that we all think of in blacks and grays. Everything seems normal, with children casually skipping rope outside and adults playing with their dogs, ordinary houses that probably look exactly the same today - until we see the street scenes, filled with classic cars roaming the streets. Turns out people driving back then were in a hurry just like today, with the cars whizzing past. It is a fascinating glimpse at a long-lost time and place. The parts of the film which show the premiere itself also are seen in this narrated version, followed by some lengthy extraneous and obscure clips of Gloria Swanson.

Mick Jagger Still Rocking As He Rolls Into His 70s: What A Career....

Mick Jagger Still Rocking As He Rolls Into His 70s: What A Career.by Lauren JamesThe Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger has finally hit 70 but there's plenty of life in the old stone yet.Friday 26th July 2013: 70 years of planetary life for the illustrious Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger as he celebrates becoming a septuagenarian. After an energetic Glastonbury performance back in June and a whole host of rock 'n' roll activities - not least dinner with Nick Clegg - hitting the headlines, The Stones have shown that they can still capture the interest of the media and convert a tonne more young fans for themselves despite having formed 51 years ago in 1962.After Glastonbury there was no time to sit down, hang up the bandanas and nestle into a future filled with colostomy bags and porcelain dentures. Instead, the band looked forward to two more mega headline sets in London's Hyde Park on 6th and 13th July to mark the close of their 50th anniversary tour and record some live tracks. Now is it time to rest? No siree: in response to NME's question whether they'd like to play Hyde Park again, Jagger looked to the future: "Not this year. I haven't given it any thought and nor has it been offered. But I'd love to do it. It's a great gig. I did enjoy it. It was beautiful. It turned out to be so wonderful with the sun going down behind the park. It was a perfect London evening."Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts have certainly led fascinating lives after rising up as the original rock stars in the mid-sixties height of fame, honing their anti-establishment image with drug arrests, sexually charged on stage antics and anarchist demonstrations against the Vietnam War outside London's US Embassy. Now able to boast an extensive library as a 69 year-old, Richards admitted to having snorted his dad's ashes mixed with cocaine, whilst Wood has been in and out of rehab and drummer Watts battled with alcohol and drug addiction but after a recent throat cancer scare he focusses on breeding horses. With such an array of colourful lives plus 24 studio and 11 live albums, you'd expect an official biographical account of The Rolling Stones' career but Mick Jagger isn't interested in penning an autobiography any time soon.Instead, the band will continue to stay in their exotic yurts, dine with prime minister, perform headline appearances left, right and centre, and see locks of Jagger's hair sell for £4,000. Because what's the point in writing an autobiography when you're still making history?
