Panchamukha Hanuman – The Mystical God
Lord Hanuman is one of the most popular Gods in the Hindu pantheon. He is considered as an ardent devotee of Lord Rama. He is believed to be a chiranjeevi-The Deathless one.
Among the various forms of Hanuman, one that has been very popular is that of Sri Panchamukha Hanuman. The fives of Panchamukha Hanuman are – Sri Hayagriva, Sri Narasimha, Sri Garuda ,Sri Varaha and Sri Anjaneya.
Significance of the Five Faces
Each of the five faces has a significance and meaning:
The face towards the East is Anjaneya Mukha in its original form. This face removes all blemishes of sin and confers purity of Mind.
Sri Narasimha Swami, facing the South, removes fear of enemies and confers victory.
The face facing the west is that of Lord Sri Mahavira Garuda and this face drives away evil spells, black magic influences etc., and removes all poisonous effects in one's body.
Sri Lakshmi Varahamurthy facing the North wards off the troubles caused by bad influences of the planets and confers all prosperity.
The mukha facing upwards of Sri Hayagriva Swami confers knowledge, victory, good wife and progeny.
So, there is nothing in the world which doesn’t come under any the influence of any of the five faces.
Origin of Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya
The origin of Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swami can be traced to a story in the Ramayana.During the war between Lord Rama and Ravana , Ravana took the help of Mahiravana who was the king of underworlds. Lord Anjaneya took this Panchamukha form to destroy the demon Mahiravana.Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swami was the main deity of Sri Ragavendra Tirtha, the saint of Mantralaya. The place where he mediated on Panchamukha Anjaneya Swami is now known as Panchamukhi, wherein a temple for Panchamukha Anjaneya Swami has been built.
A huge installation of Sri Panchamukha AnjaneyaSwami has come up at Tiruvallur,
Near to Chennai, India. A 32 feet tall Murthi has been carved out of a single granite stone. In the legends, this place was called Rudravanam and Anjaneya, while carrying the Sanjeeva Parvatha to Sri Lanka, stopped here for a while to see Sage Agasthya performing pooja to a Sivalinga. At that time, it was abode of Sages and enlightened beings.
Story behind Tiruvallur Panchamukha Anjaneya
Sri Rangaswami Battachar was a temple priest. One of those days he came across a sage Sri Ramanandanatha who was seeking food and shelter. Sri Rangaswami took care of this sage for a number of days. One day the sage declared that he is going to confer all his spiritual knowledge of Mantra. Yantra and Tantra shastras and all his spiritual powers accumulated by stringent penance on Sri Rangaswami. Though Sri Rangaswami was not prepared for this, the sage, who was a enlightened one, conferred all his knowledge and powers on Sri Rangaswami and simply disappeared. Sri Rangaswami started to chant the various Mantras handed over to him. When Sri Rangaswami chanted aloud the Panchamukha Anjaneyaswami Mantra, a 10 years old ignorant Brahmin boy, playing in front of him, started to speak in chaste Sanskrit to the astonishment of everyone. Sri Rangaswami demonstrated his prowess before His Holiness, the Paramacharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. The Paramacharya, after conversing with the boy on whom Anjaneya was made to descend, organized a meeting of learned Pundits where the spiritual powers of Sri Rangaswami could be demonstrated. At the meeting, Sri Rangaswami, through the power of his Mantra, invoked the presence of God in an ignorant 10 years old boy. The learned pundits at the Meeting asked him questions at random, relating to Puranas, Ithihasas, Mantras, Tantras, Shastras and other holy scriptures. The 10 years old boy replied all questions effortlessly and perfectly with supporting lines from the original works in Sanskrit. Because of the Divinity made to descend upon the boy, he was able to reply all the questions so well. Seeing this stupendous feat and mastery over Mantra Shastra of Sri Rangaswami the Paramacharya gave him the title of “MantraMurthi”.
Sri RangaSwami later on passed his powers to his disciple, Sri Venkatesa Battachar. Sri Venkatesa Battachar was ordained by Goddess Meenakshi, his guiding deity, to transfer all his spiritual powers to a Panchamukha Anjaneya swami Yantra and install a Viswaroopa Panchamukha Anjaneya swami Murthi on top of it, for the welfare of the humanity. This is how this ashram came into existence.
Installed in 2004, today, this Sri Anjaneya Swami stands 32 feet tall, showering blessings on his devotees. Daily poojas are being performed to Sri Anjaneya Swami and hundreds of devotees visit this place daily and get blessed by the Lord. More details about Ashram can be found from their official website http://www.panchamukha.org/
