Monsters University (2013)

Monsters University takes us back in time to explain how Mike Wazowski, the one-eyed green beach-ball-with-limbs monster, and Sulley, his fluffy blue-and-purple gigantic best friend, met— and how they ended up working for Monsters, Inc.Pixar delivers a prequel to 2001's Monsters, Inc., calling to mind movies like The Hunger Games, The House Bunny, and other familiar university themed comedies that use fraternities/sororities, nerds, jocks, the cool, and the underdogs as material.Freshman Mike (Billy Crystal), with his wildly ambitious streak, treats the laid-back Sulley (John Goodman) as his rival in their Scare Program in Monsters University (MU). Mike is textbook smart, while Sulley carries his highly esteemed family name to validate his "natural" talent in scaring. The conflict here is that Mike is just so unscary, but! he's hellbent on proving that he can be seriously scary despite the constant ridicule he gets from his peers— and also from the ruthless Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren). Will Mike overcome the challenges and prove the entire Monstropolis wrong? Monsters University in 3D is nice and charming to look at, but  this is already pretty much the present-day standard fare in animated feature films. But what's impressive here is that Pixar has truly mastered the facial expression of the monsters, which is superbly and distinctly realistic. But we go back to the core and fundamental root of what a movie is all about: the power of storytelling. Is the movie big on originality? On humor? With a strong emotional connection? Alas, Monsters University merely recycles an old storyline, with mediocre lines and mediocre humor. If Monsters, Inc. had introduced a whole new world to the moviegoers, Monsters University just sends us to a familiar place. If I were to grade it for being fun, fresh, sharply funny, and memorably heartwarming, Monsters University just receives an average grade. It's not bad at all, but it's nothing really special either.Opening across the Philippines on June 26 in Disney Digital 3D, 2D and regular theaters.

Draft'a Bir Gün Kala Söylentiler

Bobcats GM'i Rich Cho, Cody Zeller'ı draft etmek istemesine rağmen takım sahiplerinin bu yönde hareket etmeye soğuk bakması yüzünden emeline ulaşamayabilir.Magic, Cavs Alex Len'i seçerse Nerlens Noel'i seçeceklerini duyurdu. Yedinci sıradaki Kings'in C.J.

After Supreme Court, Congress must move on Voting Rights Act

The Voting Rights Act has been America?s most effective tool to eradicate racial discrimination in voting. Today, a sharply divided Supreme Court has thrown the future of this critical tool in limbo by striking down a key provision. It?s now up to Congress to revive the act.

Voting rights activists gather in front of the Supreme Court this February as the court heard arguments in the Shelby County v. Holder case on the Voting Rights Act. Op-ed contributor Myrna P?rez writes: 'It is fair to question whether congressional dysfunction will stall a legislative response to today?s ruling. But on an issue as important as the fundamental right to vote, advocates remain confident America?s leaders can come together in a bipartisan way.'

For nearly five decades, the Voting Rights Act has been America?s most effective tool to eradicate racial discrimination in voting. Today, a sharply divided Supreme Court has thrown the future of this critical tool in limbo by striking down a key provision of the act. It?s now up to Congress to revive the act.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The court upheld the act?s core ? known as Section 5 ? that requires jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination in voting to gain federal approval before changing their voting laws. But it struck down the formula that determines which jurisdictions are covered by Section 5, which as a practical matter means they do not require pre-approval at this time.

The majority held that the formula was based on old data, but it dismissed in essentially one paragraph the vast record Congress considered ? about 15,000 ? which supported its conclusion that certain jurisdictions needed to be targeted

In light of the Supreme Court?s second-guessing of Congress, lawmakers must act in a decisive and bipartisan way ? as they did when reauthorizing the law in 2006 ? to protect voting rights of countless Americans and ensure that elections remain free, fair, and accessible.

In effect, Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act blocks discrimination before it occurs. This landmark law was passed in 1965, but there is ample proof it is still critically important today. States across the country introduced a wave of voting restrictions since the beginning of 2011. With the help of Section 5, citizens, courts, and the Department of Justice were able to stop changes in voting laws that were discriminatory. For example, Section 5 blocked Texas?s strict voter ID law and its redistricting plans. It also helped drastically improve South Carolina?s voter ID law by expanding the ?reasonable impediment? exception to allow citizens without an ID to vote.

Without a robust mechanism like Section 5 to block and deter discriminatory voting changes, voting rights advocates will need to be even more vigilant. After this decision, states and localities may attempt to revive blocked laws or implement changes that have been passed but not yet submitted for federal approval. For example, Texas?s attorney general said today his state?s strict voter ID law, which was blocked by a court because of the discriminatory effect it will have on minority voters, can now go into effect.

Further, some jurisdictions may seek to enact new restrictive laws or try to put in place blocked changes that, despite not being in effect, technically remain on the books. For instance, a 2007 Texas provision, which limits eligibility for a position of supervisor of a water district to landowners that are registered to vote, is still on the books.

The court?s decision does not mean states or other jurisdictions are free to enact racially discriminatory measures, and voting rights advocates will work tirelessly to push back against laws that are discriminatory. But, we have lost an important and effective tool. Congress must act swiftly to put a new coverage formula in place to avoid the fallout that may result from today?s decision.

In 2006, Congress voted nearly unanimously to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act for another 25 years. The vote ? 98-0 in the Senate and 390-33 in the House ? came after more than 20 hearings and thousands of pages of evidence showing the continued need for the critical provision of federal approval. Since then, the Justice Department has formally blocked 31 voting changes and Section 5 has deterred countless more.

It is fair to question whether congressional dysfunction will stall a legislative response to today?s ruling. But on an issue as important as the fundamental right to vote, advocates remain confident America?s leaders can come together in a bipartisan way. They must.

Remembering Antoni Gaud?, groundbreaking architect and modernist

A Google doodle Tuesday celebrates the legacy of?Antoni Gaud?, the Catalan architect.

By Matthew Shaer / June 25, 2013

The Google doodle today honors the work of Spanish architect Antoni Gaud?.

The Google homepage today depicts six stylized images of monumental Spanish architecture, including the?Casa Batll?, in Barcelona, and the Casa Mila, in the?Eixample district of the same city. The doodle is an homage to the great Catalan architect ? and pioneering modernist ??Antoni Gaud?, who was born on June 25, 1852, in Reus, Catalonia, exactly 161 years ago Tuesday.?

It is hard to understate Gaudi's impact on the world of modern art. UNESCO, which has placed several of Gaudi's buildings on its World Heritage List, from the Casa Bellesguard to the Casa Batll?, describes his contributions as helping shape 19th and 20th century?architecture and building technology:?

Gaud??s work exhibits an important interchange of values closely associated with the cultural and artistic currents of his time, as represented in el Modernisme of Catalonia. It anticipated and influenced many of the forms and techniques that were relevant to the development of modern construction in the 20th century.

Gaud? was apparently a relatively sickly child, but his convalescence, according to one online biography,?allowed him to spend "many hours contemplating nature, drawing lessons that he was to apply later in his architecture." In the late 1860s, he moved to Barcelona, initially to study teaching, but by 1873, he was enrolled in architecture school.?

Upon his graduation in 1878, Gaud? established his own architecture firm, and set about creating the works that would make his name. Perhaps his most famous early work is the Casa Vicens, a private residence in?the?Gr?cia?district of Barcelona. In the 1880s, he also completed work on the?G?ell Pavilions, which was named after?Eusebi G?ell,?Gaud?'s most steadfast patron.?

But as the website of the?Gaud? Experi?ncia museum puts it, it was in 1890 that Gaud? began to perfect "his understanding of architectural space and the applied arts, giving his work unique and unsuspected qualities that stood out from the other Modernist architecture of his day. These were Gaud?'s mature years in which a succession of master works appeared: Bellesguard Villa, Park G?ell, the restoration of Mallorca Cathedral, the church of the Col?nia G?ell, Casa Batll?, La Pedrera, and the Nativity fa?ade of the Sagrada Familia."

Gaud? received a commission to work on the?Sagrada Familia in 1883, and the grand church, with its sharp, perforated steeples and mosaic-dappled facade, became a kind of fixation for?Gaud?, who labored over the building for more than 40 long years.?

Gaud? died on June 10, 1926, after being hit by a tram in?Barcelona. Still, his legacy lives on, as does the Sagrada Familia, which remains unfinished even today, almost a century later. Earlier this year, in an interview with 60 Minutes, Gaud?'s?biographer Gijs van Hensbergen was asked to define the one thing that made?Gaud? a great artist.?

"The capacity to see space in a totally different way," Mr. van Hensbergen answered,?"to make space explode, to see a building as a sculpture rather than just as a place to live in or a roof over your head. He's someone who reinvented the language of architecture which no other architect has ever managed to do."?

Post Perigee Moon (Super Moon), 24 June, 2013

Just past Full Moon on June 24, 2012 at roughly 8:30 pm as seen from Adelaide (click to embiggen). While I missed out on Sundays Perigee Moon ( the so called "Super Moon") due to cloud (shakes fist at sky), tonight I was able to see the just-past-perigee Moon. After, of course, clouds blanked out Venus and Mercury again. And prevented me from doing anything artistic with the rising Moon.Anyway, this is a single image taken using infinity to infinity focussing, with my Canon IXUS (ASA 400, 1/500th second exposure) through my 20 mm lens with my 4" Newtonian. I've done an unsharp mask and increased the contrast a bit as the only processing. I tried to stack 5 images in Registax, but I couldn't get them to register (sigh). Still, not too bad if I say so myself.
